Effects of Adolescent Values on the Academic Participation of Public Secondary School Students in Kalundu Sub-County, Kitui County, Kenya
By Dr. Eunice Nduta Maina
Abstract
This study investigates the effects of adolescent values on the academic participation of public secondary school students in Kalundu Sub-County, Kitui County, Kenya. Drawing on research showing that young people who engage in one risky behaviour are more likely to engage in others, the study argues that learners must be educated in the values of a civil society alongside their academic formation. It examines the diverse values adolescents hold — including parental relationships, peer influence, religious commitment, media exposure and self-regulation — and analyses how the transition from external control to self-regulation shapes school participation. The findings inform recommendations for parents, teachers and school administrators on nurturing values that support sustained academic engagement.
