The Role of Strategic Planning in the Achievement of the National Goals of Education in Kenya
By Dr. Eunice Nduta Maina
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the role played by strategic planning in the achievement of the national goals of education in learning institutions in Kenya. The study determines the goals of strategic planning, examines the national goals of education and their inter-link with strategic planning, and assesses the impact of strategic plans in learning institutions. The goals, characteristics and steps of effective strategic planning are outlined, and the eight national goals of education — among them fostering nationalism and national unity, promoting social, economic, technological and industrial needs, individual development and self-fulfilment, sound moral and religious values, and social equality and responsibility — are analysed. Using PESTEL and SWOT analysis, the paper shows how institutions can leverage strengths and opportunities while mitigating weaknesses and threats, and concludes that strategic planning is a crucial activity for institutions addressing both core needs and emerging issues.
